En el marco de la realización de SYZYGY, evento para celebrar los 3 años de trabajo de It Sounds Alternative, tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con una mujer cuyo arte y desempeño en el área de la producción musical ha sido destacable, nos referimos a Mayte Cortez, quien se desempeña bajo el nombre Collrbone.

At the doors of the realization of SYZYGY, an event to celebrate the 3 years of work of It Sounds Alternative, we had the opportunity of talking with a woman whose art and performance in the area of music production has been remarkable, we refer to Mayte Cortez, who works under the name Collrbone.

Actualmente, Collrbone nos ha dado a conocer más de 10 singles, entre los que destacan «Hypernova», «Submarine», «Insufficient» y «Desvanecer». Por otro lado, también nos ha sorprendido con el track «Anxiety», perteneciente a la versión especial del compilado «Collage» del colectivo NOISBOR y sus remixes a «Visions» de Charli XCX y a «Flashback» de Javiera Mena, uno de los tracks ganadores del concurso 2020 y release oficial.

Currently, Collrbone has released more than 10 singles, among which «Hypernova», «Submarine», «Insufficient» and «Desvanecer» stand out. On the other hand, you have also surprised us with the track «Anxiety», belonging to the special version of the compilation «Collage» by NOISBOR and its remixes to «Visions’» by Charli XCX and «Flashback» by Javiera Mena, one of the winner tracks of the 2020 contest and official release.

En esta entrevista pudimos conversar acerca del rol de las mujeres en la escena de la electrónica, sobre el hacer música en vivo y, por supuesto, de lo que nos tiene preparado para el próximo 9 de julio.

In this interview we were able to talk about the role of women in the electronic scene, about making live music and, of course, about what she has prepared for us on July 9.

¿Quién es Collrbone? ¿Cómo surge este proyecto?

 Who is Collrbone? How did this project came to be?

Collrbone: Mi nombre es Mayte y hago música bajo el nombre Collrbone. Desde temprana edad tuve interés por la música, solamente tocaba la guitarra, pero más adelante, a los 12 años comencé a hacer música desde el computador gracias a un primo. Pasé por varios nombres hasta que en el 2018-2019, por ahí,  empecé a usar el nombre Collrbone.

Collrbone: My name is Mayte and I make music under the name Collrbone. From an early age I had interest in music, I only played the guitar, but later on, at the age of 12, I began to make music on the computer thanks to a cousin. I went through several names until in 2018-2019, around there, I started using the name Collrbone.

¿Cómo es que llegas a NOISBOR?

How did you arrive at NOISBOR?

Collrbone: Todo comenzó por un amigo, él me recomendó harto con Felipe (Voux) y los chiquillos de NOISBOR. Luego de un año más o menos pude conocer a los chiquillos en persona, estuvimos harto tiempo tratando de unirme al colectivo y en el verano del 2021 me pude unir. 

It all started with a friend, he recommended me to Felipe (Voux) and the guys from NOISBOR. After a year or so I was able to meet the guys in person, we spent a lot of time trying to join me to the group and in the summer of 2021 I was able to join.

¿Y en el colectivo hay más mujeres?

And are there more women in the group?

No, por el momento solo yo.

No, at the moment just me.

Y por eso mismo, bajo tu perspectiva. ¿Cómo evalúas tú la presencia de mujeres en la escena electrónica, así como también en otros espacios?

And for that very reason, from your perspective. How do you evaluate the presence of women in the electronic scene, as well as in other spaces?

Collrbone: La presencia de mujeres es escasa, ya que no hay muchos espacios para nosotras y es necesario, que, desde ya exista un espacio seguro para las mujeres y así nosotras poder salir adelante con nuestro proyecto musical.

The presence of women is scarce, since there are not many spaces for us and it is necessary that, from now on, there is a safe space for women and thus we can move forward with our musical project.

Y ha sido, en ese sentido. ¿Difícil entrar en este mundo?

And it has been, in that sense. Difficult to enter this world?

Collrbone: Sí, es difícil, porque el mundo de la música “pertenece” a los hombres, además de que hay mucho acoso, es complicado.

Yes, it’s difficult, because the music world «belongs to men», in addition to the fact that there’s a lot of harassment, it’s complicated.

En ese sentido. ¿Qué crees que es lo que más te ha costado?

In that sense. What do you think has been the most difficult?

Collrbone: Yo creo que seguir, muchas veces el acoso me supera.

I think that go on, many times the harassment surpasses me.

Igual le pasa mucho a mujeres en la música en general, que tienden a sentirse subestimadas, ¿Te ha pasado?

The same happens to a lot of women in music in general, they tend to feel underestimated. Has this happened to you?

Collrbone: Sí, es otro problema, por el simple hecho de ser mujer nos miran en menos al ser musicas. 

 Yes, it’s another problem, for the simple fact of being a woman they look down on us as musicians. 

El próximo 9 de Julio, como sabrás, vamos a hacer el evento. ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas de ese día?

Next July 9th, as you know, we are going to hold an event. What are your expectations for that day?

Collrbone: Estoy muy nerviosa, será mi debut en el escenario así que espero que todo salga bien, que los shows se puedan hacer como uno quiere, y que haya mucha gente.

I’m very nervous, it will be my debut on stage so I hope everything goes well, that the shows can be done as we want them, and that there are many people.

Y a las personas que asistan al evento. ¿Qué podrías contarles de lo que va a tratar tu presentación?

And to the people who will attend the event. What could you tell them about what your presentation is going to be about?

Collrbone: Tengo pensado demostrar lo que es hoy Collrbone junto con un acto Live set, en el cual habrá una sesión acústica, además será un acercamiento de lo que me gustaría hacer a futuro en términos de show en vivo, ya que no me veo como DJ.

 I plan to show what Collrbone is today together with a live set act, in which there will be an acoustic session. It will also be an approach of what I would like to do in the future in terms of live shows, since I don’t see myself as a DJ.

 ¿Cuál crees tú que es la mejor parte de hacer música en vivo?

 What do you think is the best part of making live music?

Collrbone: No he tenido esa experiencia aún, pero tengo grandes expectativas de por fin poder presentarme en vivo, me dan ansias y es muy emocionante el tener la oportunidad de tener un espacio propio donde presentar un pedacito de mi a través de mi música.

I haven’t had that experience yet, but I have great expectations of finally being able to perform live. It makes me anxious and it’s very exciting to have the opportunity to have my own space where I can present a little piece of myself through my music.

Por último, quería preguntarte, ¿Qué le dirías a It Sounds Alternative en su tercer aniversario?

Lastly, I wanted to ask you. What would you say to It Sounds Alternative on their third anniversary?

Collrbone: Primero que nada, felicitarlos y agradecer por todo el apañe que nos han dado a todos nosotros, por darnos el espacio y el tiempo de apoyarnos.
