En el marco de la realización de SYZYGY, evento para celebrar los 3 años de existencia de It Sounds Alternative, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a dos proyectos musicales que se presentarán en conjunto el próximo 9 de Julio y tendrán la labor de musicalizar parte de la jornada.
At the doors of the realization of SYZYGY, an event to celebrate the 3 years of existence of It Sounds Alternative, we had the opportunity of meeting two musical projects that will present together on July 9th and will have the task of musicalizing part of the day.
Desde el lado de NOISBOR conversamos con el productor musical, compositor, DJ y artista visual Nikxz, quien ha trabajado con artistas de talla mundial como Dj Who, a quien acompañó en el Lollapalooza Chicago. Sin embargo, el acercamiento de Nikxz no solo se vincula a la electrónica, ya que actualmente también se desenvuelve en la industria de la música urbana.
From NOISBOR’s side, we spoke with the music producer, composer, DJ and visual artist Nikxz, who has worked with world-class artists such as Dj Who, whom he accompanied at Lollapalooza Chicago. However, Nikxz’s approach is not only linked to electronic, since he is currently also working in the urban music industry.
While from the sidewalk of Intaqta, we met the producer Førsaj, who a few years ago started in dubstep and managed to position himself as a skilled DJ under the alias Halikom. Førsaj is currently creating, inspired by 90’s sitcoms, ghost towns and breakbeats.
En esta entrevista pudimos conversar acerca de sus expectativas para el evento, sobre el hacer música en vivo juntos y, por supuesto, de lo que son sus proyectos musicales.
In this interview we were able to talk about their expectations for the event, about making live music together and, of course, what their musical projects are.

Para comenzar, me gustaría que se presentaran ¿De qué trata su proyecto musical y qué pueden contar acerca de los colectivos a los que pertenecen?
To begin, I would like for you to introduce yourselves. What are your musical projects about and what can you say about the groups to which each of you belong?
Førsaj: Me llamo Flavio Monsalves, hago música bajo el alias Forsaj y saco música en el sello Intaqta. El sello en general no es como un colectivo, es algo bien abierto en realidad. Tenemos gustos bien diversos, pero en general podemos disfrutar lo que nos gusta, es como bien amplio, pero mientras la música apele a nuestro gusto, bienvenida sea, y si tienen ganas de proponer algo, ya sea una propuesta visual o artística, bienvenida. No es como muy “el grupete” no más. De repente, hablamos con chicos de otros países que dicen “oh, me gusta mucho lo que hacen” y nos mandan un EP que están haciendo y son cosas muy bacanes y así. El cabecilla es Rafa, que hace música bajo el nombre Tasfet, y él fundó Intaqta y nos reunió a todos. Respecto a mi música, hoy en día hago cosas muy noventeras en general, con influencias de Reino Unido, trip hope, rave, breakbeat, acid, jungle, esa es la volá, como los breaks. No me gustan mucho los ritmos rígidos, tecnos, como “muy tiesos”. Y cuando partí fue en el dubstep o el brostep que le llaman, que fue ahí por el 2012, y así nos conocimos con el Nikxz precisamente, a través de esa música en el año 2014.
Førsaj: My name is Flavio Monsalves, I make music under the alias Førsaj and release music on the Intaqta label. The label in general is not like a collective, it’s something very open actually. We have very diverse tastes, but in general we can enjoy what we like, it’s kind of broad, but as long as the music appeals to our tastes, welcome it be, and if you want to propose something, be it a visual or artistic proposal, welcome. It’s not only “the group” and that’s it . Sometimes, we talk to guys from other countries who say “oh, I really like what you guys do” and they send us an EP that they’re doing and there’s really cool stuff and so on. The head (of Intaqta) is Rafa, who makes music under the name Tasfet, and he founded Intaqta and brought us all together. Regarding my music, nowadays I do things that are very 90s in general, with influences from the UK, trip hope, rave, breakbeat, acid, jungle, that’s the vibes, like breaks. I don’t really like rigid, techno rhythms, like “too stiff”. And when I started it was dubstep or brostep as they call it, which was around 2012, and that’s precisely how we met Nikxz, through that music in 2014.
Nikxz: Hola, soy Nicolás Cortés, más conocido como Nikxz. Yo soy productor musical hace ya varios años, he pasado por todos los géneros que he querido experimentar, y soy parte del colectivo NOISBOR, que en realidad soy más como una especie de consultor, o como los chiquillos dirían quizás, como un “gurú” (risas). Como tengo más acercamiento a la industria gracias a mi trabajo en la música urbana, he podido descubrir ciertas aristas o partes de la industria que podrían ayudar al colectivo y a los chicos a crecer, entonces como que ahí se empezó a fundamentar mi rol dentro de NOISBOR. Empecé a dar ideas o algunas cosas de referencias que yo tenía en este mundo más digital y más acelerado, quizás, que el mundo en el que muchos de los chicos de NOISBOR venían. Algunos veníamos de la música electrónica, otros vienen más del indie o hacen música alternativa, también el Felipe que es parte crucial del colectivo viene más de la música un poco más docta. Por otro lado, tenemos la parte visual, que es la que estamos desarrollando junto a Boovox y el Felipe, que tratamos de ir armando la imagen del colectivo y de los compilados que se han ido haciendo. Ahí, yo he dado mi granito de arena con todo lo que son los render en 3D y esas texturas como super brillantes y medias hiperrealistas.
Nikxz: Hi, I’m Nicolás Cortés, better known as Nikxz. I’ve been a music producer for several years now, I’ve been through all the genres I’ve wanted to experiment with, and I’m part of the NOISBOR group, in which i’m actually more like a kind of consultant, or as the guys might say, like a «guru» (laughs). As I am closer to the industry thanks to my work in urban music, I have been able to discover certain clues or parts of the industry that could help the group and the boys to grow, so that is how my role within NOISBOR began to be. I started to give ideas or some things as references that I had in this more digital and more accelerated world, perhaps, than the world in which many of the NOISBOR guys came from. Some of us came from electronic music, others came more from indie or alternative music, also Felipe, who is a crucial part of the group, comes from more classical music. On the other hand, we have the visual part, which is what we are developing together with Boovox and Felipe, where we try to put together the image of the group and the compilations that have been made. There, I have given my grain of sand with everything that is 3D rendering and those super bright and hyper-realistic textures.
¿Cuáles son las expectativas que tienen del evento?
What are your expectations for the event?
Førsaj: Sí o sí se va a pasar muy bien, sobre todo porque una instancia para tocar nosotros dos juntos con el Nikxz no se ha dado como del 2017 más o menos. La última vez que tocamos juntos seguíamos los dos metidos en el dubstep al mismo fondo y ahora de hecho no sabemos cómo va a ser lo que vamos a hacer, porque estamos en escenarios super distintos con lo que desarrollamos, entonces es entrete pensar qué es lo que realmente va a pasar en el escenario. De hecho, probablemente los siguientes días vamos a hablar recién, nos vamos a sentar y vamos a decir “Ya ¿Qué vamos a mostrar?” (risas).
Førsaj: Yes or yes it’s going to be very fun, especially since an instance to play the two of us together with Nikxz has not been given to us since 2017 more or less. The last time we played together we were both still involved in dubstep in the same way and now, in fact, we don’t know how is going to be what we are going to do, because we are in super different scenarios with what we develop, so it’s fun to think about what is really going to happen on stage. Most likely the next few days we are just going to talk, we are going to sit down and say “Now, what are we going to show?” (laughs).
Nikxz: Sí, pero yo creo que igual eso es lo emocionante, ya que uno apela a la nostalgia de lo que estábamos haciendo en ese tiempo, y quizás también podemos jugar un poco con eso y, por otro lado, también tenemos esta fórmula que hay que inventar para juntar lo que hace el Flavio actualmente y lo que hago yo, pero va a estar entretenido.
Nikxz: Yes, but I think that’s what’s exciting anyway, since one appeals to the nostalgia of what we were doing at that time, and maybe we can also play a little bit with that and, on the other hand, we also have this formula that we have to create for putting together what Flavio is currently doing and what I am doing, but it will be entertaining.
Førsaj; Sí, y el lugar es increíble, entonces es bacán tener esta instancia de que música no tan conocida o no tan popular dentro de lo que es la electrónica acá en Chile, suene en un lugar con esas características. Es un ex teatro, no es un club pequeño, es un gran lugar, entonces es una oportunidad que se agradece.
Førsaj; Yes, and the place is incredible, so it’s cool to have this instance where music that’s not so well known or not so popular within electronic music here in Chile sounds in a place with those characteristics. It’s a former theater, it’s not a small club, it’s a great place, so it’s an opportunity that’s appreciated.
Nikxz: Si, en general es una buena propuesta poder volver a generar esos escenarios donde se reúna la gente que le gusta la música electrónica y poder generar estos shows con los nuevos talentos que hay, o de gente como nosotros que lleva mucho tiempo, pero que se ha estado reinventando, y mostrar eso, lo que hemos estado crafteando, digamos. También, agradecido de tener esta instancia y de formar parte de algo tan lindo como es el aniversario de uno de los medios que igual se ha dedicado a visibilizar eso, la música que hacemos todos.
Nikxz: Yes, in general it’s a good proposal to be able to re-generate those scenarios where people who like electronic music meet and generate these shows with new talents that exist, or with people like us who have been around for a long time, but that have been reinventing themselves, and to show that, what we have been crafting, let’s say. Also, grateful to have this instance and to be part of something as beautiful as the anniversary of one of the (press) medias that has also dedicated itself to making that visible, the music that we all make.
Para ustedes ¿cuál es la mejor parte de hacer música en vivo?
For you, what is the best part of making live music?
Førsaj: Es heavy, porque la sensación que uno tiene cuando hace música en vivo… No sé, particularmente en mi caso, me gusta mucho bailar y mis raíces en la música en general es rock, desde los 7 años. Yo partí en realidad cuando supe que quería hacer música con Guns N’ Roses, y ese tipo de espectáculos ocupan el escenario de una manera super energética e incluso en la electrónica tienes a gente como Squarepusher o Skrillex, que son gente que dejan mucho en el escenario a nivel físico/corporal. Y claro, la mejor parte es mandar esa energía y recibirla de vuelta, tener esa retroalimentación cuando la gente ve que tú lo estás pasando tan bien y yo diría que el 99% de las veces se contagia, siempre ha sido así, es lo mejor de todo.
Førsaj: It’s intense, because the feeling you get when you make live music… I don’t know, particularly in my case, I really like dancing and my roots in music, in general, is rock, since I was 7 years old. I actually started when I knew I wanted to make music with Guns N’ Roses, and those kinds of shows occupy the stage in a super energetic way and even in electronic music you have people like Squarepusher or Skrillex, who are people who leave a lot in the scenario at the physical/corporeal level. And of course, the best part is sending that energy and receiving it back, having that feedback when people see that you are having such a good time and I would say that 99% of the time it spreads, it has always been like that, it’s the best of it all.
Nikxz: Si, a mi también me pasa eso, siento como que lo más bacán es conectar con la gente. No sabes si la persona que fue al show pudo haber tenido un mal dia, un mal mes, una mala semana y haber sido una parte importante de influir en que ese día no terminó mal, sino que se fueron con una buena vibra, una buena energía, de que lo pasaron bien, eso es bacán,es super llenador, el conectar con la gente y además poder generar un impacto en las personas. Yo creo que es lo más lindo de tocar, aparte de tocar, que al final estás tocando tu música, estás tocando lo que te gusta y si no es tu música, es la música que te gusta, entonces eso también siempre es llenador, o sea, poder escuchar música fuerte y bailar y volverte loco cuando quizás en el día a día, sobretodo ahora con la pandemia, como que estamos todos muy alejados, muy encerrados, no hemos tenido quizás esas instancias de liberar esos montones de energía que uno tiene, entonces también es una instancia muy linda como para hacer ese tipo de cosas, poder liberarse y cómo renovar un poco la energía después de tanto tiempo encerrados.
Nikxz: Yes, that happens to me too, I feel like the coolest thing is connecting with people. You don’t know if the person who went to the show could’ve had a bad day, a bad month or a bad week, and being an important part of influencing that day for it to not end badly, but that they leave with a good vibe, a good energy, that they had a good time, that’s cool, it’s super fulfilling, connecting with people and also being able to generate an impact on people. I think it’s the most beautiful thing about playing, apart from playing, that in the end you’re playing your music, you’re playing what you like and if it’s not your music, it’s the music you like, and that’s also always fulfilling, or that is, to be able to listen to loud music and dance and go crazy when perhaps on a day-to-day basis, especially now with the pandemic, since we are all very far away, so locked up, we have not, perhaps, had those instances of releasing these lots of energy that one has, then it’s also a very nice instance to do that kind of thing, to be able to free yourself and how to renew your energy a little after being locked up for so long.
A las personas que asistirán al evento ¿Qué podrían contarles acerca de lo que será su presentación juntos?
To the people who will attend the event, What could you tell them about your presentation together?
Førsaj: Todavía tenemos que ver qué es lo que vamos a hacer, porque definitivamente es probable que lancemos uno que otro tema que apele a lo que desarrollábamos antes, porque se extraña, pero también hay muchas buenas ideas. Con el Nikxz no he hablado, así que no sé muy bien qué es lo que él planea, pero igual me gustaría sacar, probar cosas que he pensado hacer en el escenario y que no he hecho antes.
Førsaj: We still have to see what we are going to do, because most likely we will release one or something, songs that appeal to what we were developing before, because we miss it, but there are also many good ideas. I haven’t talked to Nikxz so I don’t really know what he’s planning, but I’d still like to come out, try things I’ve thought about doing on stage that I haven’t done before.
Nikxz: A mi igual, tengo esas expectativas de que sea algo más sorpresivo y también como dije anteriormente, que apele a la nostalgia, que juegue un poquito con eso, yo creo que va a estar bueno.
Nikxz: Me too, I have those expectations that it will be something more surprising and also, as I said before, that it appeals to nostalgia, that it plays a little bit with that, I think it will be good.
¿Cómo ven la relación que se está generando entre las organizaciones?
How do you see the relationship that is being generated between the organizations?
Nikxz: La veo super, hace rato ya que veníamos juntándonos, pero como en otras instancias, al menos para el festival COSMOS fue super bueno el apoyo que tuvimos tanto de It Sounds Alternative como de Intaqta, que quisieron participar con un show que todavía estaban desarrollando, entonces fue como tener esa primicia del festival y aparte también poder colaborar con un montón de artistas de todo el mundo, de la India, de Estados Unidos, fue bacán esa instancia que se dio y también es muy bacán poder tener esta segunda instancia donde nos vamos a volver a reunir. La primera vez fue digital y ahora poder tener la opción de vivirlo en persona es super cool.
Nikxz: I think it’s great, we’ve been getting together for a long time, but like in other instances, at least for COSMOS festival, the support we had from both It Sounds Alternative and Intaqta was super good, they wanted to participate with a show that they were still developing, then it was like having that scoop of the festival and apart from being able to collaborate with a lot of artists from all over the world, from India, from the United States, that instance that occurred was great and it’s also very cool to be able to have this second instance where we are going to meet again. The first time it was digital and now being able to have the option to experience it in person is great.
Por último, ¿Qué mensaje le darían a It Sounds Alternative en su tercer aniversario?
Lastly, What message would you give to It Sounds Alternative on their third anniversary?
Førsaj: Se les toma cariño muy rápido y les deseo un muy muy feliz cumpleaños, es muy rico que plataformas como It Sounds Alternative, aparte de tener el gusto que tienen, y que les guste mostrar lo que muestran, también como personas te hagan sentir tan bienvenido, y que sea un trato tan amigable desde el principio, tan horizontal, humano y natural, se siente muy cómodo y nada, por muchos más años a It Sounds Alternative y que sigan haciendo lo que hacen, porque se necesitan plataformas como la que desarrollan. Un muy felíz cumpleañito.
Førsaj: We grew fond of them very quickly and I wish them a very very happy birthday, it’s very nice that platforms like It Sounds Alternative, apart from having the taste they have, and that they like to show what they show, also as people they make you feel so welcome, and that it’s such a friendly treatment from the beginning, so horizontal, human and natural, it feels very comfortable and yeah, for many more years to It Sounds Alternative and that they continue doing what they do, because we need platforms like the one they develop. A very happy birthday.
Nikxz: Igual felicidades, porque en realidad el rol que tienen es super importante, mucho más de lo que quizás se valora hoy en dia y al final con todas las circunstancias que hemos tenido, ser un medio independiente y mantenerse vigente durante 3 años, y ojalá muchos más, es super poderoso, porque al final hay mucha competencia hoy en dia y cada vez los medios van desapareciendo más, y que haya un medio que aguante y que esté ahí, y que también las chicas sean super abiertas a escuchar nuevas personas y poder comunicar sus historias para que la gente “más asociada” a estos medios pueda escuchar a artistas nuevos, es genial. Es un rol súper importante, sobretodo en la industria que se está dando ahora que está muy empujada hacia lo digital, pero también el urbano como que se ha comido tanto el panorama que hay pocos medios que están visibilizando el resto de las cosas que hay, porque no solamente en Chile se exporta reggaeton, sino que también hay un montón de otra gente haciendo música pop, indie, alternativa, electrónica, que están trabajando sus carreras igual de seriamente que los chicos del urbano y se agradece mucho y se aprecia mucho que un medio como It Sounds Alternative esté dando esa visibilidad, dentro de esta marejada de reggaeton que estamos teniendo.
Nikxz: Same, congratulations, because in reality the role you guys have is super important, much more than what is perhaps valued today and in the end with all the circumstances we’ve had, being an independent media outlet and staying active for 3 years, and hopefully many more, it’s super powerful, because in the end there’s a lot of competition today and the (press) medias are disappearing more and more, and that there is a medium that endures it and is there, and that the girls are also super open to listening to new people and being able to communicate their stories so that the people “most associated” with these (type of) media can listen to new artists, it’s great. It’s a super important role, especially in the industry that is taking place now that is very pushed towards the digital, but also the urban (genre) has eaten up the panorama so much that there’s few (press) media outlets that are making visible the rest of the things that exist, because reggaeton is not only exported in Chile, but there are also a lot of other people making pop, indie, alternative, electronic music, who are working on their careers just as seriously as the urban musicians and we’re very thankful and appreciative that a medium like It Sounds Alternative is giving that visibility, within this tidal wave of reggaeton that we are having.
