Es otra fría tarde de invierno que pasamos en casa en tiempos de cuarentena, reunirnos por medio de una videollamada la ha llevado a buscar una buena iluminación, lo que me permite verla con más claridad y desde más cerca. Ojos verdes destellantes y una sonrisa que no se borra de su rostro, esa es la primera impresión que me llevo de ella, parece estar emocionada y entusiasmada con la entrevista. Franka Miranda es una compositora y cantautora regional que comenzó su carrera musical a finales del 2018, desde entonces a participado en diversos festivales como el Indie Project y el Chango Rock Fest II.

It’s another cold winter afternoon that we spend at home in quarantine times, meeting through a videocall has led her to look for good lightning, which allows me to see her more clearly and closer. Bright green eyes and a smile that doesn’t fade from her face, that was my first impression of her, she seems to be excited and eager about the interview. Franka Miranda is a local composer and singer-songwriter who started her career in late 2018, since then she has participated in various festivals such as Indie Project and Chango Rock Fest II.

Considerando que en varias de tus presentaciones has manifestado tu profunda admiración por Gabriela Mistral y que de hecho “Flor del aire” nace inspirada en su poema homónimo ¿Crees que a través de tu música logras hacer trascender su mensaje?

Considering that in several shows you have expressed your deep admiration towards Gabriela Mistral and that, in fact, «Flor del aire» was created thanks to the inspiration you got from her homonym poem, do you think that you manage to make her message transcend through your music?

“Sí, definitivamente, esa siempre fue la idea, tratar también de resignificar a Gabriela, porque muchos la conocen como alguien que solo se dedicó a hacerle poemas a los niños y no saben que fue una mujer súper potente, atemporal a su época, que tuvo un discurso súper fuerte, que era feminista y luchaba por los derechos de las mujeres, una mujer que no fue solamente poetisa, que fue política, profesora y que además era lesbiana, entonces esto me hace sentir más identificada con ella. Yo creo que la gente necesita sentirse identificada con algo y ojalá algo que sea positivo como lo es el legado de Gabriela Mistral”.

“Yes, definitely, that was always the idea. Also I was trying to resignify Gabriela, because a lot of people know her as someone who only wrote poems for children and they don’t know that she was a very powerful woman, timeless to her time, who had a very strong speech, was a feminist and fought for women’s rights. A woman that not only was a poet, she was also political, a professor and also a lesbian, so this makes me feel more identified with her. I think people need to feel identified with something and hopefully something that’s positive, such as Gabriela Mistral’s legacy.”

Has participado en diversas instancias donde has tenido la oportunidad de dar a conocer tus canciones, como por ejemplo en el Indie Project. Me atrevería a decir que te ha ido bastante bien y que a la gente le gusta tu propuesta ¿De qué manera has percibido el apoyo del público?

You’ve been part of various instances where you’ve had the opportunity to make yourself more known, for example Indie Project. I would even say that things have gone pretty well for you and that people like your approach. In which ways have you felt the support given by your public?

Yo siento que cuando estoy cantando la gente queda asombrada, les gusta y reaccionan a mi música, a la propuesta que presentamos junto a mi banda. En el momento que toco me siento satisfecha, a mi no me gusta mucho el cuento de las redes sociales, a mi la gente me conoce en el momento que subo al escenario, donde puedo ser realmente yo, donde me siento libre. Pero en general me ha ido bien, las veces que he tocado lo he hecho en lugares importantes, en instancias donde va harta gente entonces eso igual es bueno.

I feel that when I’m signing people are amazed, they like it and they react to my music, to the concept that we present with my band. When I play I feel satisfied, I don’t really like social media, people get to know me the moment I go on stage where I can really be myself, where I feel free. But in general everything has gone pretty well for me, the times I’ve played I have done it in important places, in instances that gather a lot of people, so that’s good.

Tanto “Memoria” como “Su sangre en tus manos” expresan sentimientos bastante fuertes y transmiten una potente crítica a la impunidad ¿Cómo lograste encontrar inspiración durante el estallido social?

Both “Memoria” (Memory) and “Su sangre en tus manos” (Their blood in your hands) express quite strong feelings and transmit a powerful criticism towards impunity. How did you manage to find inspiration during the social outbreak?

Cuando ocurrió sentí mucha responsabilidad social, ganas de ir a manifestar mi descontento y salí a marchar… Pero también en un momento me encerré y empecé a crear «Su sangre en tus manos» que nació al ver tanta violencia, que fue lo que percibí al ver a los pacos abusando de su poder. La letra deja en evidencia que somos una sociedad que está traumada y que cargamos con la rabia. La canción es un clamor por justicia y obviamente me refiero a las manos de Piñera, que a fin de cuentas él es el culpable.

When it happened I felt a lot of social responsibility, I wanted to go manifest my discontent and I went to the protests… But also at one point I locked myself up and started creating «Su sangre en tus manos» that was born because of the amount of violence I saw, which was what I perceived when I saw the cops abusing their power. The lyrics make it clear that we are a traumatized society and we are carrying anger. The song is a cry for justice and (in the song) I obviously mean Piñera’s hands, who is ultimately the main culprit.
