Tras su exitoso paso por Lollapalooza en el año 2023 y la publicación de su noveno álbum «Grief Chapter», la banda canadiense Mother Mother se prepara para regresar a nuestro país en Octubre, prometiendo un show inolvidable.
Es por eso que para calentar motores, It Sounds Alternative tuvo la grata oportunidad de conversar con Ryan Guldemond, vocalista principal de la banda, quien nos contó detalles exclusivos acerca del nacimiento de esta nueva era, su visión de la vida y el duelo, además de su preparación para esta nueva gira mundial y las expectativas de su próximo paso por Chile.

ITSA: Hace un año, tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar Latinoamérica por primera vez como parte de Lollapalooza, ¿Cómo vivieron esa experiencia?
A year ago, you had the opportunity to visit Latin America for the first time as part of Lollapalooza. How was that experience?
Ryan: Fue increíble. Lollapalooza es increíble dondequiera que vayas, y luego en América Latina, es aún mejor, porque los fanáticos son tan apasionados, tan agradecidos, tan generosos con su energía. Nosotros llegamos al hotel y habían entre cincuenta y cien adolescentes esperando con carteles, incluso si no podían entrar al festival. Es simplemente un nivel diferente de apreciación y emoción, así que no puedo esperar a volver.
Ryan: It was amazing. I mean, Lollapalooza is incredible, anywhere you go, and then at Latin America, it’s even better, because the fans are so passionate, so grateful, so generous with their energy. We will like, show at the hotel, and there will be like fifty to a hundred teenagers waiting with signs, even if they couldn’t get into the festival. It’s just a different level of appreciation and excitement, so I can’t wait to come back.
ITSA: Ahora regresan con su noveno álbum, que es más pesado en cuanto a las temáticas que trata. ¿Cómo pasaron desde la introspección de su álbum previo «Inside» a la explosión emocional de «Grief Chapter»?
Now you’re back with your ninth album, which is heavier in terms of its themes. How did you go from the introspection of your previous album, «Inside», to the emotional explosion of «Grief Chapter»?
Ryan: Interesante pregunta. Sabes, pienso que la música decide lo que quiere ser. Es como que no sé de dónde viene esto, yo sólo voy con el corazón abierto, y así van naciendo estas canciones y estos temas. Después de que está todo hecho y miras hacia atrás es cuando decides el por qué. En el momento, no tengo idea, pero mirando hacia atrás, es como “¿Por qué escribiste acerca de la muerte?”. Quizás sea porque la vida ha sido buena con nosotros, porque cuando las cosas van bien, empiezas a reflexionar en el hecho que esas cosas terminan, y luego todo termina. Y quizás es por eso por lo que hablamos tan específicamente acerca de la muerte.
Recuerdo que estaba hablando con un amigo que estaba de luto por el fallecimiento de su padre y otros amigos en su vida. Él estaba enfrentando toda esta pérdida, y le dije “suena a que estás pasando por un episodio de duelo”, a lo que me dijo “eso suena a un gran título para una canción que todavía no existe». Y entonces, pensé: “Oh, sí, totalmente”, así que cogí la guitarra y escribí «Grief Chapter». Entonces, ya sabes, así es como funciona, sin tener una idea clara de lo que quieres hacer. Escribir no funciona de esa manera.
Ryan: That’s an interesting question. You know, I think the music decides what it wants to be. It’s like, I don’t know where this stuff comes from, I just show up with an open heart, and then these songs and themes are born. And then, looking back after it’s all done, that’s when you sort of decide why. At the time, no idea, but looking back, it’s like, why did you write about death? Maybe because life has been so good to us, right? Because when things are going well, I think you start to reflect on the fact that they end, and then it’s like, well, everything ends.
And maybe that’s why we wrote so specifically about death. I know that I was talking to a friend and he was grieving the passing of his dad and some other friends in his life. So he was dealing with all this loss, and I said to him, like: “it sounds like you’re in a grief chapter”, and he said “it sounds like that’s a great title for an unborn song.” And so then I was like, “Oh yeah, totally.” So I picked up the guitar and wrote «Grief Chapter». That’s how it works, more than like, you have a clear idea as to what you want to do. Writing doesn’t work that way.
ITSA: Sí, eso es muy interesante. En otras entrevistas, has dicho que «cuanto más piensas en la muerte, más te acercas a la vida». ¿Es por esta experiencia que llegas a esa conclusión?
Yes, that’s very interesting. In other interviews, you’ve said that «the more you think about death, the closer you get to life.» Is this experience the reason you come to that conclusion?
Ryan: Sí, creo que, a medida que una persona envejece, se siente más agradecida por estar aquí, porque cuanto más mayor te haces, creo que más te acercas al final. Todos los días pienso en la muerte y no de una manera triste, sino muy festiva. No estaré aquí para siempre, por eso quiero que hoy realmente signifique algo. Quiero estar despierto para que me guste la textura de mi vida hoy, y por alguna razón eso sucede cada vez más a medida que envejezco, es algo que alimenta el arte, alimenta las relaciones, impulsa las decisiones que tomas en tu vida. Supongo que el álbum «Grief Chapter» es sólo un subproducto de convertirse en ese tipo de persona.
Ryan: Yeah, I think hopefully as a person gets older, they get more grateful for being here, because the older you get, I think the closer you get to the end. For me, every day I think about death. Not in a sad way, but in a very celebratory way. It’s like I don’t get to be here forever, so I want to make today really mean something. I want to be awake to like the texture of my life today. And so for whatever reason, that just happens more and more as I get older, and it fuels the art, it fuels relationships, it fuels the decisions that you make in your life. I guess «Grief Chapter» (the album) is just a byproduct of growing more into that type of person.
ITSA: Una de las canciones que más nos llamó la atención fue «Forever», donde mencionas la búsqueda de la eternidad y la duda de que exista. ¿Puedes contarnos un poco del proceso creativo para escribir esa canción?
One of the songs that caught our attention the most was «Forever», where you mention the search for eternity and the doubt of its existence. Can you tell us a little about the creative process for writing that song?
Ryan: Sí, «Forever» era una pequeña nota de voz que tenía en mi teléfono. Un día, hace un par de años, escribí esa primera letra en una guitarra acústica, fue algo pequeño, como una idea privada. Luego, avanzamos al momento en que trataba de encontrar la canción adecuada para que Molly, mi hermana, la cantara. Yo estaba revisando cientos de notas de voz, simplemente tratando de encontrar la canción correcta hasta que choqué con esta. La había olvidado por completo, y estaba como “oh, esto me hace sentir algo”. Y eso es lo que haces, escuchas viejas ideas, y solo esperas a ver si algo te eriza el pelo o se te pone la piel de gallina, y cuando escuché ese pequeño memo, simplemente sentí eso en mi pecho. Suena como una gran canción para Molly, especialmente porque ella es alguien muy escéptica. Yo simplemente creo en la eternidad, es como “por supuesto que voy a surfear con los ángeles”, pero no para Molly. Ella es más inteligente que yo, es más escéptica, así que fue una buena canción para ella.
Ryan: Yeah, «Forever» was a little voice memo that I had on my phone. One day, a couple of years ago, I think I just wrote that first lyric and on an acoustic guitar, it was very small, like a private idea. Then, fast forward to trying to find the right song for Molly, my sister, to sing, and i’m like going through like hundred of voice memos, just trying to find ideas, and then I stumbled back on that, forgot all about it, I was “oh, that just make me feel something”. And that’s what you do, you listen to old ideas, and you just wait to see if your hair raises or you get goosebumps, and when I listen to that little memo, I just felt that on my chest, and then it was like, that sounds like a great song for Molly, especially because Molly’s someone who’s really skeptical. For me, I just believe in eternity. I’m like “yeah, of course I’m gonna go surfing with the angels”, but not for Molly. She’s smarter than me, she’s more skeptical, so it was a good song for her to sing.
ITSA: Volviendo a la gira, ¿cómo ha sido el montarla? ¿Cuáles son las cosas esenciales que necesitas para prepararte antes de salir de gira?
Back to the tour, what was it like putting it together? What are the essential things you need to prepare before going on tour?
Ryan: Creo que es bueno estar lo más fuerte y saludable posible, y adoptar esa actitud de “está bien, voy a dormir en un autobús” y “no voy a dormir, voy a estar en lugares nuevos, estaré cantando todas las noches, estaré rodeado por la energía de miles de personas cada noche, pongámonos realmente firmes, tranquilos, saludables, limpios, claros y entremos en este caos”. Así que cualquier cosa que puedas hacer, tal vez algunas meditaciones adicionales o algo así, más agua con limón, más flexiones de brazos.
Ryan: I think it’s good to be as strong and healthy as possible, and get into that attitude of “okay, i’m gonna be sleeping on a bus”, and “I’m not gonna be sleeping, i’m gonna be in new places, i’m gonna be singing every night, i’m gonna be surrounded by the energy of thousands of people every night. Ok, let’s get really grounded, calm, healthy, clean, clear, and go into this mayhem”. So, I think whatever you can do, maybe some extra meditations or something, more lemon water, more push ups.
ITSA: ¿Cuáles son las canciones que estás más emocionado de cantar para mostrarlas a la audiencia?
What songs are you most excited to sing and show to the audience?
Ryan: Me encanta cantar «Grief Chapter». Me encanta cantar una canción vieja llamada «Back to Life», de nuestro álbum «Dance and Cry». Es muy primal y siento que me pierdo en esa canción. También me encanta cantar «Hayloft II», esa es una de mis favoritas, y «Explode» del nuevo álbum.
Ryan: I love singing «Grief Chapter». I love singing an old song called «Back to Life» from our album «Dance and Cry». It’s very primal and I feel like I lose myself in that song. I love singing «Hayloft» too, that’s a favorite, and «Explode» from the new album.
ITSA: ¡Nos gusta mucho! ¿Qué podemos esperar como audiencia de los shows en América Latina? ¿Hay alguna sorpresa o algo que puedas contarnos?
We love it! What can we expect as an audience from the shows in Latin America? Are there any surprises or anything you can tell us?
Ryan: Estamos trabajando en un cover muy especial en este momento. No puedo revelarlo todavía, pero sí, estamos muy entusiasmados con eso. Más allá de lo anterior, ya sabes, vamos a tocar con todo nuestro corazón. Vamos a tocar canciones de todas las diferentes épocas. Tenemos este popurrí acústico de como 6 canciones y que hace más o menos eso, y es genial. Sí, va a ser un gran espectáculo.
Ryan: I think we’re working on a really special cover song right now, so I can’t give it away quite yet. But yeah, we’re pretty excited about it. Beyond that, you know, we’re just gonna play our hearts out. We’re going to pull songs from all the different eras. We have this acoustic medley of like 6 songs and it kind of does that and it’s pretty cool. Yeah, it’s going to be a great show.
ITSA: Suena a que así será. Tienen el setlist bien pensado
Sounds like it will. You have the setlist well thought
Ryan: Sí, muy orquestado.
Ryan: Yeah, very orchestrated.
ITSA: ¿Hay algún mensaje que te gustaría darles a tus fans latinoamericanos?
Is there a message you’d like to give to your Latin American fans?
Ryan: Especialmente Chile es uno de nuestros mercados de reproducciones más altos. Puedes ir a Spotify y puedes ver qué países y qué ciudades, y creo que Santiago, Chile, era como nuestra ciudad con el mayor streaming del mundo. Es simplemente increíble. Solo podemos decir muchas muchas gracias, agradecemos a nuestra estrella de la suerte por tener una conexión con América Latina y con Chile. Significa mucho para nosotros venir y comenzar a construir la relación.
Ryan: Chile especially is one of our highest streaming markets. You can go on to Spotify and you can see which countries and which cities, and I think Santiago, Chile, was like our highest streaming city in the world, It’s just incredible. So we can just say so many thank yous and man, yeah, we thank our lucky stars for having a connection to Latin America, to Chile. It means a lot to us to come down and begin building the relationship.
ITSA: Sí, y a nosotres como fans también nos encanta. Cuando interactúan con fanáticos en América Latina, tenemos mucha energía. ¿Hay algo que te gustaría decirles a esos fans latinoamericanes que son los más apasionades?
Yes, and we love it too as fans. When you interact with fans in Latin America, we get so much energy. Is there anything you’d like to say to those Latin American fans who are the most passionate?
Ryan: Obviamente nuestra gratitud es extrema, pero ya sabes, para esos fanáticos jóvenes, súper apasionados como los que hemos conocido, parece que tienen mucho que decir. Tienen mucho que expresar. Tienen sueños, tienen arte, tienen canciones. Son personas muy creativas. Y sólo quiero decir que creemos en ellos y queremos ir a su concierto algún día. Queremos ser fans de ellos.
Entonces, cuando se trata de tus sueños, persíguelos y siempre protege tu alegría; hazlo, hazlo por ti mismo. No lo hagas para validación externa. Hazlo para traer felicidad a tu corazón. Y si alguien tiene que vivir tu sueño, entonces bien podrías ser tú, deberías ser tú. Así que simplemente les decimos a las personas que sueñan con una vida hermosa, que se merecen tenerla, y les decimos que la persigan
Ryan: Obviously our gratitude is so extreme, but you know, for those young, like, super passionate fans, like the ones that we’ve met, it feels like they have a lot to say. They have a lot to express. They have dreams, they have art, they have songs. These are very creative people, and I just want to say that we believe in them and that we want to go to their concert one day. We want to be a fan of them.
And so just to pursue your dreams and always protect your joy when it comes to your dream, do it, do it for yourself. Don’t do it for external validation. Do it to make your heart happy. And yeah, someone has to live your dream, so it might as well be you. We just say to the people out there who are dreaming up a beautiful life, that they deserve to have it, and we say go for it.
ITSA: Ese es un gran mensaje. Sí, estoy muy feliz de que hayamos podido hablar. Y nuevamente, estoy muy emocionada de estar presente en su concierto. Todos lo estaremos esperando con ansias.
